Roy J. Carls, M.D., is a graduate of and has been practicing medicine since. In 2006, he opened his new practice, Peak Performance Orthopedics in Cumberland, Maryland. Dr. Carls is Board Certified and a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons, specializing in sports medicine, foot and ankle surgery, arthroscopy and carpal tunnel releases. Also, Dr. Carls is now performing total shoulder replacements.
Dr. Carls worked with the Greater Chesapeake Orthopedic Associates in Baltimore. Previously, he was the staff orthopedic surgeon and team physician at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. He was also on staff at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, where he also did his residency training.
Board-certified in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Carls did his internship at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia and completed a foot and ankle fellowship at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. He received his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine. Dr. Carls was trained as a Navy flight surgeon and served with the Second Marine Air Wing, based in North Carolina. He is also a member of the American Medical Association, the Eastern Orthopedic Association as well as the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society.
